Hello and Namaste everyone!!!
Warm greetings this morning with a cup of tea beside me. I hope everyone is safe, fit and fine…everything is just going to be fine!
With a cup of tea and 90’s pop running in background, I was wondering how I missed anything about Tea. Very close to me, it gives me kick every time and always on for Tea.
Yeah as one leading chai venture’s one-liner “India runs on Chai” truly for Indians, Chai (Tea) is a Somras (somras = som + ras, Som means happiness, peace, and Ras means juice). It is a real recipe for happiness and freshness.
Do you know, which is the most brewed drink in the world? Yes, it is your Tea (Chai).
Chai in varies from Sridevi’s in BTM 2nd stage at 7 am, to Aishwarya Bakery in JP Nagar, to Anna’s Chai in Akshaynagar, to Irani Chai in Electronic City and these are the areas in Bangalore within a radius just of 5-6 km or so around me. Can you just imagine the diversity in types and varieties in Chai (Tea) we have around? Literally there are 100’s of varieties for Tea in India and across the world. So you can see, Chai is very critical in our life.
I was in Hyderabad for more than 2 years starting in the year 2010. When shifted I started my food expedition.
And today is all about that one place in Hyderabad defines Irani chai for me. This place has a long history behind it and inspires everyone. Yes, Café Niloufer literally makes me jump in my seat every time.
With the death of her maid during childbirth, Princess Niloufer convinces her father-in-law the problems arising due to this lack of medical facilities. As a result, a specialty hospital for women and children was built. Indeed, the hospital was named Niloufer Hospital in her honor Located in the near hospital area, Café Niloufer is founded in the year 1978, it is named after the Princess Niloufer. It is a heart for Tea lovers and has a really big fan following.
Talking about Café Niloufer, it is owned by Mr. Babu Rao who once worked as a cleaner at the place and took over its management over the period and now runs the show. Very proud thing and I really appreciate what he has done for Tea lovers.
By the time I am writing this, I have lost the count of my visits here.
I had a chance to Café Niloufer in their old and new avatar as well. Located in Lakdikapul, Hyderabad, Café Niloufer had transformed from roadside Bakery to modern-day café. Now they have constructed 2 floors with a sitting arrangement upstairs. Upon entering the Café, you are welcomed with the fresh aroma of bakery products.
The ground floor has stand-in tables where you can have quick Chai and Osmania biscuits. The menu list has extended and now they have pastries and some of the snack’s items.
In recent times they have started Premium Lounge in Banjara Hills. Yet to visit the place and will come up with details very soon.
Irani chai is a different form of tea unlike any other Indian version of chai, the tea decoction is slowly brewed with spices in a separate container and milk is also boiled in a separate container with the addition of mawa or khoya. The result is a deeply flavored chai with the creaminess of milk/khoya that makes you want for more. Sometimes you might get the addition of cinnamon and green cardamom. While the exact ratios for Irani chai vary and you can see a variety of recipes online but most of Irani café owners maintain secrecy.
Another thing that needs a mention @ Café Niloufer is Osmania biscuits. Surprisingly these biscuits got their name following the last ruler of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. Osmania Biscuits are very popular Tea biscuit in Hyderabad. The biscuits were first baked on the demand of the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan, who wanted a snack that was a little sweet and a little salty. Today, the evening chai is incomplete without these biscuits anywhere in the city.
Thanks to Karachi bakery and others Osmania biscuit is now available all over India. No doubt they maintain the authenticity but what you get @ Café Niloufer is hard to miss. Osmania Biscuit here breaths freshness and authenticity. This biscuit is a tasty combination of wheat flour, table butter, milk solids and delightfully loaded with the rich taste of butter balanced. Colored golden brown, Osmania Biscuits are very soft with the perfect balance of sweet and salt make then stand out.
At Café Niloufer, you will find a lot more items with a lot more variety in biscuits and other snacks. Some of them I tasted was awesome and believe all items will be. but what stands out is their Irani Chai with Osmania biscuits.
All I will say, to make your any time perfect, all u need is a cup of Irani chai and Osmania biscuit. And if you stay in Hyderabad, I might no need to tell you but for visitors visiting Hyderabad and Chai lover, this is must visit place for me and for everyone.
